well...

it's 2009.

Half-way through the first full week of work there were massive layoffs. So it didn't exactly start in the best way. But I'm still around. (Yay?)

I'm trying to be positive, really. But I'd rather just sit in pajamas and devour a tub of ice cream with brownies. WHAT'S SO WRONG WITH THAT, WORLD?

2008 is almost over

What a tumultuous ride. Here's a recap:

January: I officially graduated college. Wooo.

February: My boss called me into her office and told me they lost funds for my position and that I have less than two weeks at work. My reaction: "Oh shit." (In my head of course.)

March: Started another job that my old boss helped me find. Yay.

April: Family cruise to Bermuda. You know you're growing old when you go on vacation with your parents and actually enjoy it.

May: Graduation. Yup, months after actually graduating. One half of me was over it. The other half still couldn't process the gravity of it all. And then Mexico with the girlies. Yay for all-inclusives and fruity cocktails.

June: I started to notice my thighs expand and said: Oh hell no. And so I started going to yoga and Pilates classes regularly. Yay for free fitness classes in the summer. In news outside of my self-absorption, Hillary Clinton ends her presidential campaign. A piece of me wanted to cry a little. Bitter supporters turned to McCain, totally missing the point of her campaign. Signed up for my first credit card.

July: The presidential election starts to heat up. More bylines at work. Yay.

August: Olympics and Michael Phelps madness. If his body isn't an inspiration to work out, I don't know what is. Election madness. The McCain/Palin ticket wasn't good for my blood pressure. I attempted to quit shopping for a month. One weekend of relapse but I made it up with an extra weekend in September. A lovely weekend Philadelphia trip on a budget.

September: The economy gets shittier, prompting some panic attacks and a lot of reconsidering my career path. Fun times.

October: More election madness. Presidential and vice presidential debates made me want to throw things at Republicans. More economic shittiness.

November: I stopped going to biweekly yoga classes. Whatever, it's cold. The economy still shitty. BUT: Yay Obama!! And a freelancing opportunity opens up for me. Inspiring and hopeful (and no, I wasn't even an Obama worshipper).

December: Turned 23, though I still feel like a teenager. I haven't worked out since October. Will start again soon. It's been a year since I finished college, but I still don't really have this career path figured out. 2009 looks...uncertain for everyone.

I'm not superstitious and don't take horoscopes seriously, but my horoscope in the December issue of Glamour makes me want to believe:

"Ask the universe and ye shall receive! The stars are gearing up to grant you a long-held wish. Try to be patient, energetic Sag. It might take a little bit longer than you'd like for this dream to happen -- but it will."

And so I'll try to be optimistic. Be more aggressive. Start working out again. (It's been so much fun eating everything in sight these past 2 months though.) Goodbye, Bush and hellooooo President Obama. And yay, Philippines trip with the family!

Bring it, 2009.

There is such a thing as being too thin

I stopped by a Barnes & Noble earlier this week and picked up a few women's magazines to look at pretty layouts and clothes (who reads these days anyway?). I noticed something similar in all of them: they were noticeably lighter. I had a stack of four and I didn't feel burdened at all. Cosmo, Lucky, Self, Glamour. They were all thinner. And now my Marie Claire subscription just arrived. It's much thinner too. It's freaking flimsy.

Magazines rely on advertisers to get more funds for content pages, and when advertisers are in trouble, magazines are in trouble.

This is terrifying.

As much as I know the future of publishing is in the internet, this is still really depressing. I grew up reading magazines, flipping through glossy pages of great layouts and ads and of course actually reading well-written articles and witty editorials. I'm not trying to be cliche, but honestly, magazines are the reason I decided to pursue Journalism. And if they die, it's like a part of me dies.

Oy.

Back to business

The long holiday weekend is over and it's back to work tomorrow. I guess that has its positives: I won't be stuffing my face with pie every hour and I'll actually get something done.

As far as freelancing goes, I'm lacking ideas as to what to write for a specific site. I'm drawing a blank. That's the hard part about being a freelance writer-- you always have to have ideas or else you won't be getting paid.

Sometimes I hate thinking.

I'd rather eat pie.

these boots are made for freelancing (and walking!)

Meet my new babies. They're prettyyyyyyy...casual, but not too casual, with heels totally comfortable to walk in. They're well worth it. Even though I haven't even gotten paid for my first freelancing gig yet.

The holidays are here, so I hope you all have a happy holidays. Times are still shitty, but what can you do now, right?

When life gives you lemons, you make margaritas and enjoy. (I think lemonade is a waste of a potentially good alcoholic drink, to be completely honest. I mean, if you're gonna have something a little sour, it might as well have a real kick to it.)

Happy holidays!

Crap, I'm turning into Carrie Bradshaw, minus the Manolos and rent controlled apartment, and all the sex, boo.

I have great news: An old editor recently contacted me about freelancing opportunities and so of course I said HELL FREAKIN YES! (Not with those exact words but I pretty much conveyed to her how I'd loooooove to do it.)

I've been saying I should get into freelance work since before graduation, but I never took the initiative to actually do it (I'm a procrastinating bastard like that). So I'm really really grateful for this opportunity.

I'm expecting my first paycheck soon. It's not like winning the lottery, but a little extra cash is always great. Although 3/4 of that paycheck is already spent on beautiful boots that I saw yesterday while working on more freelance writing. They're so pretty and they're coming tomorrow! Yay!

It's been a while since I had to deal with deadlines outside the office, so I need to work on my time management and discipline, like not shopping for shoes when you're supposed to be doing work.

What a week.

Do I need to mention it? Congratulations, President Barack Obama. Thank you, America. Thank you thank you thank you. Let's hope the good news keep coming.

Speaking of news, I'm disappointed that the Philippines is one of the few countries who favored McCain over Obama. I'm disappointed, but I realize that my country has a long history of colonialization and therefore has an inferiority complex when it comes to race. We look down on our own people, who naturally have darker skin, and idealize foreigners with lighter skin. We probably have a long way to go before we can shake off this way of thinking. We also have a long (and consistent) history of corrupt politicans bleeding our country dry, and it's hard to think positively after years of government letting us down. But this election's showed that we and the world can change.

Also, this election has inspired and touched people to tears (Me? Almost. Just almost. A part of me still can't believe it). If you haven't run out of emotions yet, this Washington Post article is worth reading from start to finish.

I don't need to mention the craptastic economy and the publishing industry either, but if I keep it all in I might explode. When will the layoffs and magazine closings end? Soon, please? I'm not ready to give up on this career yet. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?

Good thing I have that tub of ice cream I bought in case the election didn't turn out how I wanted it to. It's low-calorie, because it's not good to be unhealthy and uninsured at the same time.

"I'm so excited! I'm so excited! I'm so...scared" Oh, Jessie Spano

The good news: Happy November!

The potentially (hopefully) good news: 2 days till election day! TWO days! We can vote the Republicans out of the White House! Let's do it! (Please oh please, America, I don't want to be depressed on November 5th.)

The not so good news: The economy still sucks. Not that anyone needed to be reminded of that. Oy. I read Gawker.com and Mediabistro.com everyday and for the past couple of weeks without fail, there has been a headline about massive layoffs or publications folding every single day. EVERY SINGLE DAY. And of course, there's this: the top 6 industries at high risk for job cuts. Guess what's included in that list? Yup, publishing. Ugh.

Which is why I plan to buy bottles of wine and delicious and fattening pies for Thanksgiving dinner.

I don't need airquotes to say You Are An ASSHOLE, John McCain

I chose to watch the season finale of Project Runway last night instead of the first hour of the presidential debate. And I don't regret that choice because hearing McCain speak and hearing him debate with Obama makes me sick. But I did tune in to the debate after Project Runway, just in time to hear both candidates' views on late-term abortion and women's health. This time, hearing McCain's views didn't make me sick. They made me utterly disgusted. Insulted. LIVID.

Are you kidding me, McCain? Are you seriously telling me that a woman's health is irrelevant in the abortion debate? Women's "health" is not an excuse to get an abortion, it's a serious consideration. It's a shame you don't have a vagina or try to understand our side of the argument, McCain. It's a shame you don't have a functional brain anymore either. I get it, you're more concerned about a potential person than about an already living woman, that to you, we are born to be mothers and are nothing more than walking vaginas who will clean your house and make you dinner, but there is no need for that mocking tone. Unfuckingnecessary.

McCain never had my vote, but now he has none of my respect either. And anyone who still thinks this douchebag is fit to be president is a joke in my book.

Vote for the intelligent, dignified and diplomatic candidate. Vote for the man who will represent America respectfully and who will gain the respect of the rest of the world.

Obama/Biden '08.

Excuse me, Google?

Is Google trying to tell me something through its Google ads? First it's the "Chubby Girl No More" ads and now its nursing classes.

Dear Google,

Mind your own business.

Thanks,
Miss not fat and not interested in nursing Mango.

Oh hey, it's October

I feel bad starting October (well, its already kinda mid-October but whatever) on this blog with a sad note, soooooo....

I share with you Yes We Can (hold babies). You may not be the most fervent Obama supporter, but after looking at this site you just may like him a little more. Or at least have a smile on your face and that is priceless. Plus, who can resist some cuuuute little babies?

RIP CosmoGirl (Or Shitfuckshit, part 3, but I don't want to know how many parts this is gonna have)

Oyyyyyy.

I've only read a few issues of CosmoGirl. When the mag came out, I was already done with teen magazines and was moving on to bigger and better things, like the real Cosmopolitan and then other magazines after finding out that those 101 sex tips can be made up by a monkey. A horny and crazy monkey, with a bit of taste in fashion too.

But it's not about the magazine itself, but what its closing represents: more laid off workers, fewer job opportunities, and crappy crappy times. Crap crap crap. Make it stop!

CosmoGirl is a part of magazine history too. When Atoosa Rubenstein, at the time a fashion editor at Cosmopolitan, pitched CosmoGirl to Cathie Black at Hearst, this lead to Atoosa becoming the youngest editor-in-chief in Hearst history. I may not have agreed with her views on certain things (like the sexualization of teens and all that fluff in magazine favored over substance), and she did kind of act loopy while on America's Next Top Model, and holy crap seeing her intimidated me like I couldn't believe, but I had maaadd respect for Atoosa because of what she achieved. I could only hope to achieve something like that.

Bah.

Did I pick the wrong time to pursue magazine journalism?

Bah.

Bahhhhhhh.

Shitfuckshit, continued.

I'm terrified.

I'm looking at job openings and they are not plenty.

Which leads to the dilemma: Do I stick it out for this women's lifestyles magazine/website editorial dream job, or do I cave, become practical and hope the dream comes true someday?

And then, do I stick to writing/communications/media? Or do I go somewhere more practical, stable, lucrative?

I never thought about what happens after college, what happens after the internships. And now... oh crap. How do people figure this out??

I need to grow up. I need to get my shit together again. I've been too comfortable where I am and I need to keep... working, fighting, improving, going.

Good thing I have my shiny new laptop to like, do things with and be up-to-date with technology and such as. The Iraq. Maybe they don't have maps but can see Russia from their house.

Oy.

BTW, that "Chubby Girl No More" Google ad needs to go away ASAP. There is no chubby girl around here, okay, Google? I'm not fat! But some chocolate would be sooooo good right now.

This shit is bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s

It's been a ridiculous couple of weeks at work, people are "resigning" here and there, and with financial institutions failing, unemployment rising, it's scary. Scaryyyy. That's all I can say because I don't know what else to say/do. Shit. Shitfuckshit. I think that sums up the sentiments of most Americans anyway, right?

And people are still voting for Republicans because....?

I'm thankful to still have a job. But shit. Shitfuckshit.

If starving models and Posh can do it, well so can I

It's September! I survived one month without shopping (to make up for that one stray weekend, I stretched it out to the first week of September, so ha). And so I think it's only fitting that I reward myself with shopping!

Platform pumps are tempting me right now and while the pairs I've seen in the past seemed skanky to me, I'm willing to let go of that judgment and consider getting a pair. I will not be intimidated by the height. And I hope I don't fall flat on my face while walking in them. (One of my biggest fears, I swear.) I figure it's something you get better at with practice.

Also on the shopping list is a pair of sneakers. Or two. One running and one for, well, not running, duh. My old Converse is hole-y. I don't think I have motivation to actually run though. Maybe I'd do it if I had a treadmill, but I don't know if I have the motivation to actually buy a treadmill. I mean, for the price of a treadmill I could buy shoes. Walking in heels is a workout too.

Princess Mango, Fat Fighter

Wouldn't that be an awesome superhero name?

Now that the free fitness classes held by NYC parks are over, I need to figure out a way to keep exercising. I'm looking into donation-based yoga classes but I think I need a little more cardio. Call me crazy, but I think I prefer running on a machine more than running outdoors. Maybe it's because my neighborhood is a little ghetto, maybe I'm too lazy to lace up my sneakers (speaking of, I don't even have running shoes), or maybe it's because I don't want the world to see me panting and stopping after 3 blocks.

So I'm considering buying a treadmill or an elliptical. Maybe. I'll have to do some math to see if it's worth it. Blah. Math.

When the Olympics were still on, and especially when swimming and gymnastics were on prime time TV, I used to workout while watching the games. I can't really just sit and watch sports (like a stereotypical girly-girl, that stuff bores me), so I figured it made sense to exercise while watching these incredibly athletic people do what they do best.

But like, I can't really do that while watching Gossip Girl (omg, it's on tonight!) or ANTM. I prefer to sit and do nothing or stuff my face while watching crappy TV. It just makes sense.

And so, the point is, I need to be healthier. The end.

Go Team USA, eff that, Go Me!

I did it: one weekend without shopping. I went into Forever21 on Friday and American Apparel today and bought nothing. The shopping habit can and WILL be conquered! (To be fair though, Forever21 at Union Square has nothing right now.)

In other news, I'm super happy because one of my slideshows (my all-time favorite assignment so far) is the 2nd most popular slideshow on the site after less than 2 weeks (and if those damn photo rights didn't have an expiration date, I'm pretty sure my slideshow would be the 1st on that list, boo). But yay for it getting more than 100,000 pageviews!

Time to celebrate... time to shop! Oh. Right. Hmmm...

asdfgh!@#$ or.. i don't know what i'm doing with my life

I'm sure it's normal for someone right out of college to not be so sure what the hell is going on with her life. To not have a plan to follow or not know what the next step is. Right??

But see, I'm the type of person who likes having a plan, who neeeeeds to know what to expect, what's next on the to-do list, especially when it's my own frickin life. (Yes, maybe I do have a control problem, but is it so wrong to like being in control? No.)

The fact that the next 5 years are filled with question marks scare the shit out of me. To grad school or not to grad school? To do more freelance work or not? If yes, then how? and where? and when or how the hell will I get health insurance? Will I ever afford my own apartment? What the hell am I doing???

aaaAhhhh!!!!

I hope the fall brings me back to my more overachieving self. The one who spends more hours hard at work than staring at the TV. But for now, I will spend the day watching the Olympics (goooo Michael Phelps!) and hope the laundry gets done somehow. And maybe make a to-do list.

my weekend of sin

I did something I wasn't supposed to do. Twice.

I shopped.

But, one could argue that well-fitting jeans are hard to find, and so when one finds such a pair, ON SALE at that, one MUST buy it. One can also argue that bras are necessary, and so when a good pair goes on sale for two for one, one MUST take advantage.

I can't rationalize my buying a JCrew shirt, but it was on sale too. So really, I didn't fail at the no shopping thing by thaaat much.

I lasted a whole week.

I suck at this no shopping thing.

Going cold turkey was never a good idea for anything anyway.

Ugh.

Sunday, August 3, 2008

having a credit card bill to pay makes you realize something...

that spending money on crap you don't really need is not such a smart idea. I've had my credit card for more than two months and I've managed to consistently spend about $300 a month on clothes, shoes and bags. That's about a week of pay a month. Not on food, not on transportation, not on groceries. Just on frivolous, spontaneous things (granted, they are pretty things...).

And so for the month of August I will not be shopping. At all. No new clothes, no new shoes, no more bags.

And the fall collections are just starting to go on the shelves! Boo.
